Modelling can be a highly rewarding and fulfilling career or a side hustle but may need a lot of homework, planning, strategy and hard-work. If you have always had a dream of becoming a fashion model but currently have no or little experience, there are several steps you can take to pursue your goal. Here is a basic suggested roadmap to help you get started:

Research and understand the industry:

Familiarise yourself with the beauty & fashion industry, including its different segments, trends and popular brands. Learn about the requirements, expectations and standards for models. This will give you a solid foundation and help you set realistic goals.

Define your modelling niche:

Fashion modelling encompasses various categories such as runway, editorial, commercial, fitness, social and more. Determine which niche aligns with your passion, interests, strengths and physical attributes. This will help you focus your efforts and target the right opportunities. The industry is changing but there are still a lot of stereotypes that define models especially women.

Develop your personal style and grooming:

Pay attention to your personal style and grooming habits. Experiment with different looks, hairstyles and outfits to develop your unique sense of fashion. Maintain good skincare, haircare and overall fitness to ensure you are in top shape.

Build a modelling portfolio:

A modelling portfolio is a collection of your best photographs that showcase your versatility, range and ability to portray different characters or styles. Start by collaborating with local photographers, stylists and makeup artists to create a diverse portfolio. Aim for a variety of shots, including headshots, full-body shots and different poses. You may also chose to look as unique as you can be without having the need to be versatile. A lot of designers and brands are looking for unique vibes and this is a great opportunity for people who do not want to be everything for everyone.

Attend modelling classes and workshops:

Consider enrolling in modelling classes or workshops to enhance your skills and learn industry techniques. These classes often cover topics like posing, runway walking, facial expressions and photo shoot etiquette. They can provide valuable insights and help you build confidence in front of the camera.

Network within the industry:

Networking plays a crucial role in the modelling industry. Attend fashion events and local fashion shows to connect with industry professionals including photographers, designers, stylists and other models. Join online communities and social media platforms where you can showcase your work and engage with industry insiders. make sure these platforms are

reputed and responsible. If you are below 18 years of age, make sure your parents or guardians are are of all your activities & initiatives.

Follow the right connections:

Make sure you are following experts and professionals who have been part of the industry for a long time in order to get the real picture of how the industry works and what the future of modelling could look like. It is important that your learning and references come from people who have a good track record in their respective field of expertise. It is especially important in the initial stages of your career.

Seek a mentor or guide:

Having a mentor can be very helpful for your modelling journey. A mentor can provide guidance, industry insights and support. These interactions can boost your confidence, offer networking opportunities and help you avoid mistakes. A mentor’s wisdom and perspective accelerate your growth and increase your chances of success. Seek out a mentor to navigate the industry and reach your goals.

Look for a reputable modelling agency:

Research and identify reputable modelling agencies in your area or desired location. Look for agencies that represent models in your niche and have a track record of working with reputable brands. Submit your portfolio and attend agency open calls or casting events.

Stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle:

Maintaining your physical fitness and overall well-being is important in the modelling industry. Follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly and take care of your mental health. Stay disciplined and dedicated to your fitness routine to ensure you are always ready for potential modelling opportunities. Report any harassment or abuse online or at work to your parents, agency or authorities.

Be persistent and resilient:

Building a successful modelling career takes time and perseverance. Understand that you may face rejection along the way but don’t let it discourage you. Keep improving your skills, staying updated with industry trends and actively seeking opportunities. Stay positive, resilient and open to learning from each experience.
